Nothing beats a cup of mulled wine after a long walk in the cold. And nothing beats how easy it is to make it, and keep it hot, in the slow cooker.

Steamy, sweet, spicy red wine will warm you to the core. It is especially fantastic to drink after being outdoors on a very cold day. Making it in the slow cooker means you can start it before going out, then come back to a gorgeous smelling house. Cinnamon, cloves, allspice and ginger combined with orange juice, can turn a plain bottle of red into something pretty amazing. The only thing I need now is a proper winter’s day. Enough with the sun already. Bring on the snow!

Ingredients

750ml (1 bottle) red wine

1/2 cup orange juice, freshly squeezed

1/3 cup (5 Tbs) brown sugar

2 cinnamon sticks (approx. 7 cm long)

2 cloves

1/8 tsp powdered ginger

1/8 tsp powdered allspice

1/2 orange, sliced

I’ve also seen lemon or lime juice being used, but I haven’t tried it myself. What I will be trying, is to replace some of the orange juice with pomegranate or cranberry juice.

Step 1

Combine wine, orange juice, sugar, cinnamon sticks, cloves, ginger and allspice in the slow cooker. Cook on low for 3-4 hours till flavours have blended and sugar is completely melted. Garnish with orange slices.

Note: The star anise you see in the picture is only for garnishing, I don’t like the taste so I didn’t use it in the recipe.
