The Greek Slow Cooker

Easy, Delicious Recipes From the Heart of the Mediterranean

The idea for this book came a long time ago, when I was first experimenting with the slow cooker and trying to make simple every-day dishes from scratch. For a while things weren’t going so well. But then I found some decent recipes and got the hang of it. I remember one of my first successes being stuffed courgettes (zucchini) in egg-lemon sauce. I was ecstatic. I’m not sure anyone on the planet has ever been that happy about cooking any stuffed vegetable. That put me on the path of trying numerous Greek classics and finding that – actually – Greek cooking is really well suited to this method.

 

The Greek Slow Cooker is a collection of recipes for food that one would find on a Greek family table, in Greece, today. Most of them are quite traditional (we Greeks do, after all, love our classics) but some have interesting twists. What makes me most excited is that a lot of these dishes aren’t what you might expect from a slow cooker! Yes we have soups and meaty stews (Chicken Avgolemono and Beef Yiouvetsi please stand up), but we also have a no-crust pie or two (Spanakopita anyone?), some eggy recipes (enter Froutalia, a delicious omelet with sausage and potatoes – yes you can cook eggs in a slow cooker), several seafood options (hint: not only fish), loads of veggies and legumes (vegetarians I’m looking at you!) aaaaand…. sweet treats! Can’t have a cookbook without sweets now can we? (I c a n n o t wait for you to try the Portokalopita aka orange pie). Make things you never imagined, using the best kitchen gadget ever to be invented!
