A bit about The Foodie Corner going international

I don’t know if I’m going about this the right way, but I’m writing these words without looking at the original Greek text. The Greek blog pages preceded the English, as I had a different plan at the time I started The Foodie Corner. However, things change (especially my plans – they change all the time) so here we are. The reason I’m not looking at the Greek “About Me” is that my intention is not to just translate my text. Doing that usually results in weird grammar and syntax, and a general stiffness to my written word. Also, I feel I have different things to say to my international friends than what I say to my Greek friends. There may even be recipes that I don’t share on both sides. For example a really traditional Greek dish might only appear here in English, as my Greek readers probably have their own fabulous version from the many fabulous Greek food blogs that are out there, or, come to think of it, from their own fabulous grandma or mum or aunt. I do however reserve the right to change my mind down the road! This blog is a work in progress, and it’s growing with me and following me down my path. And at the end of the day, I will be listening to what you readers say. So if I stray from the right track, let me know about it!

A bit about me

Well, my name is Eleni and I’m half Greek half English. I grew up in Greece, and spent a few years in the UK as a student. Truth be told, I don’t have a foodie background. I didn’t even start cooking till I was a student. Ahem, ok, until I was in my third year as a student. During the first two years my gourmet talents reached baked bean or spaghetti on toast levels. I think I might have made tzatziki once too, because my foreign flat mates insisted. After I returned to Greece a weird transformation took place and I started obsessing over recipes. I collected any I could get my hands on. I might have even ripped one (ok two) out of a magazine in a doctor’s waiting room… When I moved into my own place I started to actually cook too. And that was the beginning of my cooking journey. Now I still love reading recipes, but I’ve stopped buying cooking magazines since I’ve run out of space to put them, and I can’t for the life of me remember what’s in the ones I already own. My inspiration comes mostly from other blogs, the odd cookery book, and of course the odd brainwave.

A year ago, the Mister and I decided to move outside the city, to a coastal area near Athens. To a house with a garden that’s a 4 minute walk from the sea! Wow. I still can’t believe how lovely it is. So here, from my tranquil little corner of the real world, I share my recipes in my little corner of the virtual world.

A bit about The Foodie Corner

This blog is my own little spot on the big ol’ internet. Here I share my cooking adventures, hoping that you will try them and love them. As I mentioned previously, the English and the Greek versions might not necessarily be twins, they might just be brother and sister (very similar but not identical!). If you see something in Greek that isn’t available in English, and you want to know more about it or get the recipe, just give me a shout!

On the menu that runs along the top, you will see the main sections of the blog. Apart from the “recipes”, you will also see “tips”, “slow cooker” and “goodies”.

A bit about the Slow Cooker Corner and the Goodie Corner

Slow cookers are my favourite cooking gadgets. I am in love with my two little 3.5 litre appliances. When I started this blog, I really wanted to introduce this great invention to Greek readers. They are practically unknown here, and I couldn’t believe how people were missing out on a fantastic way to have healthy meals on the table in an easy and fuss-free way. In the end, I decided I had to make it easy for readers to get their hands on a slow cooker, so now they are available to order via the Goodie Corner. This section was specially created for all my favourite goodies, which I hope people will find just as great as I do.
Important Note: The products in the Goodie Corner are only available to order in Greece, thus I have not translated the information. Should you need assistance with ordering something, please email me.

Browsing The Foodie Corner – Don’t skip this bit, it’s actually quite useful!

– The home page contains my most recent posts

– The “recipes” section on the main menu is where you can look for recipes by category. Hover over the word to see the menu box. There are two types of categories, based on your search criteria:
a. What you are eating (ingredient) / How you are preparing it (method)
b. When you will eat it (e.g. breakfast, main etc) / Why you are eating it (diet, fasting etc)

– In my ingredient lists you will see the following abbreviations:

  • gr = grams
  • Tbs = tablespoons / 1 Tbs = 15 ml
  • Tsp = teaspoons / 1 tsp = 5 ml
  • 1 cup = 240 ml
  • 1/2 cup = 120 ml etc

– In the recipe descriptions you will see the following symbols:

number of portions

preparation time Will only show when total time is under 30 minutes. Time starts counting when all the ingredients are assembled and prepped as listed e.g. weighed, measured, chopped, melted etc.

low cost indication Will only show when total cost for all portions is under 10 euro – as per average Greek prices.

«Show me more ideas and suggestions» – Here I will share, where available, extra information on the ingredients. What they are, what you can substitute them with, which brands I like etc.

Rate It. Let me know what you think about the recipe. I know what I like, but I want to know what you like! On the left you will see the existing rating, and underneath the recipe you can rate it with one (oh dear, I’m doing something wrong) to five (that’s more like it) hearts.

For a happy blogger! The more the better! I’ve tried to make the process as easy as possible. Please take a moment to leave me a comment, an observation or a suggestion. I read them all, I try to reply to them all, and I really appreciate them all.

One thing I love about the blogging world, is the support bloggers show one another. So in some of my recipes I will share the love by linking to similar dishes on other blogs.

search

Υou can search for something using a key word, by “pulling down” the search box. Click on the blue arrow at the top right hand side of the home page, drag it down, type in what you are looking for and press your enter/return key. Easy! (and pretty cute, isn’t it?)

Now off you go, explore my blog and learn more about me through my cooking!
